Generosity of the Red States

generosity.gifAccording to the Catalogue for Philanthropy, the National Generosity Index for 2005 reports the most generous states for charitable giving in the US are 1) Red States and 2) Bible Belt states.  The most miserly states are 1) Blues States and 2) states hostile to Christian principles.   Mississippi, which is also one of the lowest income states, tops the list as the #1 most generous whereas New Hampshire comes in dead last at #50.  Massachusetts comes in at #49, New Jersey at #48, Rhode Island, Wisconsin and Connecticut rounding out the bottom 5.

Aside from initial political observations, it is interesting to note that Christians, even poorer ones, are more charitable than the most wealthy of progressives, giving generously despite their lack of affluence.  Meanwhile, wealthy Democrats such as Ted Kennedy and John Kerry search for ways to protect their money from death and inheritance taxes through various loopholes unfamiliar to the "commoner", and when these Blue States give, it is to largely secular causes (supporting gay rights, pro-abortion organizations, environmental issues, etc.) rather than religious.  Religious charities tend to support the poor, feed the hungry and give shelter to the homeless.

Hat tip to PCD for this great quote from Abraham Lincoln, who narrowly won re-election in 1864 (soldiers and their families widely supported Lincoln… sound familiar?) because of the American Civil War.  Despite grave criticism from opposition, Abraham Lincoln went down in American history as one of the greatest American Presidents of all time.  (*It’s also interesting to note that the majority of military and their families support President Bush and the war effort as with Lincoln)

Loved the post....great observations!! Funny how Christian Conservatism is never attributed with their generosity towards stuff like you mentioned in this article here.

Also like the quote by Lincoln! =) I don’t think he would have been popular with the DNC of today. He was too politically incorrect. Can you imagine the reaction G. W. Bush would get if he was to make that same quote in public concerning some of the government officials currently in the House and the Senate? And not just on the left either. Some on the right would fall into that category very neatly I think.

Great post!!

Can you see Dean, the DNC, the DLC, the Hollywood left, etc. all saying that you can't elect Lincoln because he was too ugly to be President?

Great post, Amy. This flies in the face of all those who deem the Religious conservatives as hateful, etc... Even those most hated by the left (Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, etc...) donate millions to relieving the suffering of the poor not just in America but all over the world.

As for Lincoln, he's not alone, almost all war-time presidents suffer from low approval ratings. Their 'ratings' rise signifcantly when the history books are written.

<b>Amy -</b>

I LOVE this image/caption! Where did you find it...cuz I might need to borrow it sometime! ;-)

A veritable "Rogue's Gallery" could be represented therein...add Pelosi, Biden, Reid, Dean, Boxer, and the list goes sadly on and on. This IS treachery by our own elected leaders, and it makes me sick.

Good'n my Friend!

The left does not think that people are capable of generosity on their own so it must be coerced. It is part of the politics of the sin of <i>invidia</i> or envy which views the world in terms of taking from those who have they don't think it is fair for one to posess what somebody else wants. Rather than let the one who does not have earn the posession by legitimate means, you take it from the one who already has it. Not necessarily to redistribute it, but in some cases make it so nobody can have it either.

How I love Lincoln. He really knew how to rule a country. Yeah, hang them, or better still: burn them alive at a public square. And don't forget to take your children with you to the show so they can learn a couple of lessons about Democracy, Freedom and Justice.

Clever man this Lincoln. It's easier to run the White House and to start a war whenever you choose to when there's not annoying oppositon talking nonsense.

Thanks, PCD. This quote deserves a place at my humble blog.

It just occured to me -- these two Massachussets Senators are a fine example of "those who live in glass houses...."

One is a <b>Murderer</b> and the other a <b>Traitor</b>. Interesting...

We need more presidents like Abraham Lincoln, especially nowadays, however, he would be ostracized for his beliefs in modern day which I find to be rather sad.

I love the quote PCD provided it says it all.

I am proud to say, I am in the red zone!

Great post Amy. The Lincoln quote is priceless!

Jose,

Do you have a problem supporting your country? What Lincoln was talking about was what should be done to elected officials who actively were trying to divide this union of states called the United States of America.

I realize, Jose, that you aren't American and have a very flawed view of what America is from a very partisan and flawed media.

Unfortunately, HTML doesn't work in the reply section. Squarespace is working on a program, from what I understand, that will recognize HTML. Oddly, it used to, but they're updating. So if you see <B> </B> and <I> </I>, it won't be recognized.

Jose' is extremely uninformed, but in his defense, he's not an American, he's in Spain. He is obviously immensely uninformed about American Presidents. Abraham Lincoln is one of our most beloved Presidents ever, and enacted the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing slaves. He is one of America's greatest civil rights proponents, orators, intellectuals and Presidents. He was indeed a great man. The fact that Jose' dislikes both Lincoln and Bush speaks volumes.

Amy,

I'm glad that my dislike for Bush talks volumes of me. I'm not fooling anyone, this is me.

I do think Lincoln was a great man and one of the best US Presidents in history. He shaped his time and ours. But a barbaric statement is not less repugnant by coming from a great man, no matter his purpose.

Thanks.

Great quote Amy! I will bookmark your page.
Lincoln was not talking about voicing opposition, he was referring to actions that give aid and comfort to the enemy in a time of way. I know of NO country that does not have laws against such actions. Of course when a country runs away when it gets its nose bloodied I guess such laws are unnecessary.

war...not way
November 26, 2005 | Unregistered CommenterJ Rob
J Rob,

I was thinking along the same lines. In fact, if you look at countries that have either a no or low tolerance level for treason and comforting the enemy with no ACLU in sight, these countries don't have these types of problems. Ordinarily they are not as free as we, but this is the problem with freedom: it requires responsibility. Careless Congressmen and Senators willing to abuse America can.

If we were truly waging an unjust or ill-advised war, it would be the moral responsibility of these Democrats to speak up. However, they are demagoguing in the worst possible of ways... for popularity and votes.

When they align themselves with the sentiments of Osama Bin Laden, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and Saddam Hussein, you know they're on the wrong side of the issue.

RAM, ditto! I'm checking out your blog so I can add you to my blogroll.
