The Spontaneous Combustion of the Left

The Democrats are imploding. Michelle Malkin, "Unhinged" is right. It’s simply an embarrassing time to be a Democrat.

Democrats lost big last week when Ted Kennedy made Mrs. Samuel Alito cry during Senate Judiciary Hearings for the Supreme Court nominee as Kennedy accused Samuel Alito of being a woman hating racist with "troubling ties" to a Princeton alumni group. The group confirmed that Alito was not a member of the group, but why pass up a perfectly good smear campaign on a technicality?  Kennedy’s membership to the Owl Club, long reviled at Harvard as "sexist," was evicted from the campus in 1984 for violating federal anti-discrimination laws authored by Kennedy. In light of this embarrassing revelation of hypocrisy, Kennedy said of being affiliated with the group: "I shouldn’t be and I’m going to get out of it as fast as I can."

Meanwhile, Kennedy admitted that he himself probably couldn’t pass Judiciary Committee muster. "Probably not, probably not," said Kennedy.

plantationsmall.jpgNext, various Democrats exploited Martin Luther King Jr’s holiday in an attempt to smear Republicans.  Hillary Clinton took the opportunity to promote racial unity at a NY church by saying,

"When you look at the way the House of Representatives has been run like a plantation, and you know what I’m talking about.  It has been run in a way so that nobody with a contrary view has had a chance to present legislation, to make an argument, to be heard.”

“We have a culture of corruption, we have cronyism, we have incompetence.  I predict to you that this administration will go down in history as one of the worst that has ever governed our country.”

Watch the video:(thanks to Political Teen)  Ms. Clinton also addressed Hurricane Katrina victims in the audience saying, "(I offer an apology) on behalf of a government that left you behind, that turned its back on you." Okey-dokey then.

Dem. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin also used the civil rights leader to make some bizarre racial comments:

chococity.gif

We as black people, it’s time, it’s time for us to come together. It’s time for us to rebuild a New Orleans, the one that should be a chocolate New Orleans and I don’t care what people are saying uptown or wherever they are, this city will be chocolate at the end of the day.

(Video: thanks to Political Teen) This was apparently a reference to Chocolate City, the 1970s funk recording by Parliament that called on blacks to fill the urban void left by white flight.  Some supporters behind him looked overtly taken aback….. but it got worse:

"Surely God is mad at America. He sent us hurricane after hurricane after hurricane, and it’s destroyed and put stress on this country again. Surely he doesn’t approve of us being in Iraq under false pretenses. But surely he is upset at black America also. We’re not taking care of ourselves."

(Video part II: thanks to Political Teen) Now the crowd’s really looking concerned.  It’s unclear as to the sincerity of these comments…. perhaps they were sarcastic or ironic since it’s hard to imagine any politician publicly making such stupid comments… or perhaps we now see the real Ray Nagin and can understand a bit better why New Orleans is such a colossal disaster.

Still bitter over his 2000 Presidential defeat, former vice-president Al Gore also hijacked the Martin Luther King holiday with a speech condemning Pres. Bush and "illegal wiretapping".

hearmenow.bmpOn this particular Martin Luther King Day, it is especially important to recall that for the last several years of his life, Dr. King was illegally wiretapped-one of hundreds of thousands of Americans whose private communications were intercepted by the U.S. government during this period.

The FBI privately called King the "most dangerous and effective negro leader in the country" and vowed to "take him off his pedestal." The government even attempted to destroy his marriage and blackmail him into committing suicide.

This campaign continued until Dr. King’s murder. The discovery that the FBI conducted a long-running and extensive campaign of secret electronic surveillance designed to infiltrate the inner workings of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and to learn the most intimate details of Dr. King’s life, helped to convince Congress to enact restrictions on wiretapping.

The result was the Foreign Intelligence and Surveillance Act (FISA), which was enacted expressly to ensure that foreign intelligence surveillance would be presented to an impartial judge to verify that there is a sufficient cause for the surveillance. I voted for that law during my first term in Congress and for almost thirty years the system has proven a workable and valued means of according a level of protection for private citizens, while permitting foreign surveillance to continue.

Yet, just one month ago, Americans awoke to the shocking news that in spite of this long settled law, the Executive Branch has been secretly spying on large numbers of Americans for the last four years and eavesdropping on "large volumes of telephone calls, e-mail messages, and other Internet traffic inside the United States." The New York Times reported that the President decided to launch this massive eavesdropping program "without search warrants or any new laws that would permit such domestic intelligence collection."

(Videoagain, Political Teen)

Tracey Schmitt, a spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee, shot back: "Al Gore’s incessant need to insert himself in the headline of the day is almost as glaring as his lack of understanding of the threats facing America. While the president works to protect Americans from terrorists, Democrats deliver no solutions of their own, only diatribes laden with inaccuracies and anger. "

The Clinton/Gore administration, of course, did the same thing with legal executive authority, which would make for one more Democratic hypocrite.  White House spokesman Scott McClellan said of Gore, "I think his hypocrisy knows no bounds."

Even Democratic political strategist James Carville, promoting his new book Take It Back: Our Party, Our Country, Our Future, co-authored with Paul Begala, said:

"Our (Democratic Party) has a disease that must be rectified - and soon - if we want a chance of gaining back the White House or the Congress.  We think the problem with the party is anatomical, a direct result of outdated beliefs, such as that supporting health care for everyone must also mean support for late-term abortions.

"There’s a significant part of the Democratic Party that doesn’t want to reform anything. We call them the ‘Remainderists.’ OK? Remainderists are people who say that if you hate them (the GOP) enough, then we’re what remains and then people will vote for us and then we can have our people at the Capital Grill (a popular power restaurant a few blocks from the Capitol). And then we can get more golf trips and bigger steaks.

"The central Democratic problem is that we lack a narrative. You hear a Democratic speech and you hear that ‘I stand for a woman’s right to choose, a person’s right to health care, a nationalist foreign policy, a cleaner environment.’  That just produces a litany of ideas that sounds like something we’re for. But it doesn’t mean anything.  That’s got to change.

"We actually believe, that the Democrats should embrace what we call ‘Progressive Patriotism.’ We should wrap ourselves in the flag just like Republicans have done so successfully post-9/11 and even back to 1994 when House Republicans developed their ‘Contract with America.’"

Wow.   Throw in a little Howard Dean, Harry Belfonte and Charles Rangel and you’ve got a whole tragic comedy known as your Democratic Party.  YeeeeHaaaaaawwwwwwwww!

Earlier this week, contributing blogger Amy Proctor observed: “It’s simply an embarrassing time to be a Democrat.” True words, indeed. And if only the Dems weren’t so shameless, they might see it themselves. Alas, as we often say, recognition is the first step to betterment.

Of all the tasty quotes above that should disgust anyone who believes in a safe, just America, I have respond to Mrs. Clinton's outrageous comparison of the House of representatives to the ante-bellum southern plantation system. This was an egregious exploitation of a divisive metaphor meant to endear her to black voters. It has nothing to do with conditions in the House. Mrs. Clinton's party is the architect of both the Jim Crow South and the new "plantation", the buy-a-voter-with-government-largesse plantation. It was the Republican President Abraham Lincoln who acted to end slavery with courage and resolve, and it was actually under the Eisenhower administration that Civil Rights took the greatest stride forward and American blacks enjoyed the most benefits before the Great Society's War on Poverty (Lyndon B. Johnson - democrat)
enslaved millions of poor people with subsidized illegitimacy - and homes headed by single parents are the leading cause of poverty in the USA.

Hopefully the voters will see through the shrill demigoguery, the nasty, partisan character smears, the negativity and failure to offer a positive vision for America and reject it.

Oh, and this is the party threatening Judge Alito to sustain the law enabling a million American babies a year to be slaughtered in their own mothers' wombs - yeah, the party defending the weak and vulnerable in our society.

This is the most hateful blog that I have ever read.

Great post Amy...
Reminds me of why I wrote this to describe myself in my Blog. "I'm just a standard old Republican who cares. It’s not by my fault. Have you seen the Democratic Party lately???"
Take care...

Malissa,

I'm so sorry you feel that way. You're welcomed to express what EXACTLY you feel is hateful.

Oddly, your IP resolves to Amsterdam, which is where one of the biggest anonymizers reolves to. I don't know if there's a connection.
January 18, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterAmy Proctor
Hmmmm... oddly, Malissa cranberry and from the post about Mrs. Bush and abstinence have the identical IP info:

OrgName: RIPE Network Coordination Centre
OrgID: RIPE
Address: P.O. Box 10096
City: Amsterdam
StateProv:
PostalCode: 1001EB
Country: NL

Shocking! Could it be that only a few people think I'm hateful but they keep disguising themselves? Interesting. Get a life, trolls!
January 18, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterAmy Proctor
Mrs Proctor, your posting rules state that you want a real name and email or url. I complied and gave you my name and email, I used an open proxy because you irresponsibly post the ip addresses of all your commenters.

What EXACTLY isn't hateful about this blog? From your misguided ramblings to your commenters chauvinist attitudes.

It seems really sad to think that Republicans control all three branches of government and you still need to blame Democrats for all of the country's problems. You have controlled Congress for over a decade and the presidency for five years, yet you feel the need to bash Hilary, Al Gore and Ted Kennedy? They control nothing. There is something really screwy about that. It is time for Americans to call the GOP leadership of this country to account.
January 19, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterMalissa Watson
Obviously dear sweet Malissa hasn't been introduced to the charms of moveon.org .

Typical leftist deflection, though. They get called out on their antidiluvian policies and all of a sudden we're engaging in hate speech. Sigh.
January 19, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterDamon Hynes
Ms. "Malissa",

Those who have nothing to hide, hide nothing. I have no idea what's irresponsible about your IP showing IF your name is clicked on unless you're trying to be disingenious. Coincidentally, you posted against around the same time that "Cranberry" did. Ironic!

Just as anyone can use a proxy and use a fake IP, anyone can make up a fake e-mail. I don't trust you madam and don't have the will for games. You're diverting from the topic and I'd rather the thread not be hijaked.

I'm not blaming the Dems for everything wrong with the country....although, now that you bring it up..... I'd blame it on liberal secularists... call them what you will. I'm just pointing out how bizarre their rhetoric has become. If it weren't so irresponsible it'd be really funny. What is funny is how criticizing Democrats, who are participating in dangerous tactics, is considered hate speech. I guess only criticizing Christians and conservatives is loving, right?

If you want to post something authentic, no proxies.
January 19, 2006 | Registered CommenterAmy Proctor
Amy, "Melissa" is a part of the implosion by the left. We are hateful because we don't agree with them and we don't see the need to cede control of the country to the far left whackjobs.

Melissa does not like you exposing the hypocrisy, if not the stupidity that rules the Democrat party. That is why we are hateful.
January 19, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterPCD
Good post, Amy. Great job of tying associated but separate pieces together for a more holistic view. Liberals may opine having no control in the legislature and that may be true in the House, but the Senate has experienced more than one threat of Democrat filibuster activity which has hung up judicial nominees, the Patriot Act renewal and other business of the people.

Don’t worry about Melissa; she is still able to walk around without being covered from head to foot and be in the company of her owning male, so she isn’t being repressed too badly.

I do wish the Democrats would come up with some useful “solutions/ideas” (rather than the usual obstructionism) because monopolies are not good. The GOP really needs some competition to return the party's phylosophy to its Reagan and Gingrich conservative roots.
January 19, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterOld Soldier
Make that "philosophy" vs phylosophy, please.
January 19, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterOld Soldier
Malissa,

If you want to protect yourself, get a router. Using proxy servers is just misdirection. You have no guarantee of keeping your IP private when you post comments on somebody's blog. Considering some of the nasty things people have said in the comments, I don't think Amy has done anything out of line.

AmyP,

Besides "I agree with you", all I can really say about this entry is that I loved the subject line. It's so true...
January 19, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterTrent
I am glad this was posted Amy, keep up the good work.

No matter what we say, there will always be a liberal leftist who gets their feathers ruffled, but they never can substantiate their standpoints or views effectively for anyone take them seriously.
January 19, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterLeticia
Hi Amy,

I have to agree with Malissa. I'm a very "hateful" person, and here I am on your blog. I hate dishonesty, hypocrisy, obfuscation, race-baiting, smear tactics, mud-slinging, crass partisan politics, promoting a political agenda and calling it objective reporting, reducing slavery or the holocaust to a slogan, reducing Martin Luther King to a talking-point, people who whine and moan but offer no constructive ideas, people who deflect criticism of their own failures by blaming the federal gevernment, people who blame George Bush for every thing bad that happens in the U.S. or around the world.

My suspicion is that you might from time to time also express some of those "hateful" tendencies. (hee hee)

Oh, you must mean the "good ol' days" BEFORE the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 when Jim Crow was the law of the land in the South?
Oh,yeah...great time to be an African American then.

Malissa,

Fear not. You see, I've learned that you can respectfully disagree with conservatives, and use facts to support your particular point of view. I've done so on many blogs, including this one.
Most of the sane conservatives can't argue with facts. Some resort to attacking the source of the facts. Some try to bend facts to support their arguments. In my view, the truth is the light.
That's why I find it HILARIOUS when right wingers on this post pine for the segregation era when discussing Civil Rights and African Americans.

Yep, LIBS really do say the DARNDEST THINGS! And thanks for including that James Carville piece - that was enlightening indeed! Good Job, as always!

I think real the problem is that getting elected costs so much money. The GOP is at home with getting sponsorships from big business, it's consistent with their political point of view, but it is at odds with some of what a left-wing party might want to stand for. So you end up with the democrats being a kind of "republicans light", the diet Coke of ev-il, if you will.

There might be something to be said for limiting the money you're allowed to spend in a campaign.
January 19, 2006 | Unregistered Commenterjez
Jez, the other side of that coin is that the GOP must spend more because the MSM gives the dems the benefit of the doubt about everything. Hollywood, the major TV networks and newspapers openly support democratic causes - and we're not talking traditional blue collar, little guy type issues - we're talking abortions, homosexual marriage, feeding talking points to Bin Laden and Zarqawi - not the democratic party of Truman or Daniel P. Moynihan. So with such shrill, lopsoded and brazen support for the democratic party, what SHOULD republicans do to articulate their message? Lay down and take it?
January 19, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterJohnny
There's plenty of right-wing media, from newspapers to talk radio. I don't live in America so can't judge your TV, but American movies usually pander to conservatives as much as liberals (trying not to offend anybody) though I haven't analysed it carefully. I imagine you notice things you disagree with more than things you agree with, I know I do.

Hooray for gay marriage btw. You just know they'd through the most stylish weddings.

jez: I wonder how much the Clintons made in total from "renting" out the Lincoln bedroom?

I wonder also how Democrats can point the finger at Republicans, and use the words, "culture of corruption", while keeping a straight face? Especially after the scandals of the previous administration.

Sounds like, "culture of corruption" is going to be the new dimocrat parrot line. Seems even some Dims don't like the "Plantation" line, so that is out. Oh sure, they will occasionally use the , "Where are the WMD", and my namesake, "Republican Attack Machine", but now that they have learned a few new words, I am sure they will run it inthe ground!

As far as I know, the only person who accepted Abrahmoff (sp) money, that has NOT returned it, or donated it to charity is Senate minority (leader?) Harry Reid.

What a hypocrite! It is only wrong to take lobbyist money if you are a Republican according to the Dem leader.

Explain that lib trolls!

Cobra,

Your factoids are mostsly your opinion you palm off as fact.

Shall we start with exposing Harry Reid's dirt?

Dems And The "Revolving Door":
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV): "Law-Enforcement Authorities And Others Said The [Abramoff] Investigation's Opening Phase Is Scrutinizing ... Minority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat ..." (Jerry Seper and Audrey Hudson, "Abramoff-Linked Probe Focuses On 5 Lawmakers," The Washington Times, 1/11/06)

"[A]bramoff Did Hire As One Of His Lobbyists Edward P. Ayoob, A Veteran Reid Legislative Aide. Manley Acknowledged That Ayoob Helped Raise Campaign Money For His Former Boss. Lawyers Close To The Abramoff Operation Said That Ayoob Held A Fundraising Reception For Reid At Greenberg Traurig's Offices Here." (Jeffrey H. Birnbaum and Derek Willis, "Democrats Also Got Tribal Donations," The Washington Post, 6/3/05)

RAM, I'm not supporting the Democrats here, rather I'm thinking about why they're an imperfect representative for the left. They share too many financial interests with Rupublicans.
January 20, 2006 | Unregistered Commenterjez
Jez, what financial interests are you talking about and what's wrong with them?
January 20, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterAmy Proctor
Dems need to pander to businesses to raise comparable funds as republicans. Repubs tend to side with businesses anyway, but often an ideologically pure dem would find his financial interests at odds with his political ones.

It seems that liberals can't stand the truth. Their nasty side comes out and in their anger they get profane and threaten the Washington Post on their Ombudsman's blog to the point the Post shuts off the comments.

Just an interesting aside before anyone feels too sorry for the weepy Mrs. Alito. She's not exactly the clingy little Missus. She isn't even exactly Mrs. Alito. She prefers the name Ms. Sarah Bumgardner. At least until last week, she did.
Cheers.

Maureen, I'm not sure it makes a difference unless you're trying to prove that women who don't take their husband's last names are detached, unfeeling or don't love their husbands. All of which are beside the point.
January 22, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterAmy Proctor
Maureen: Kind of reminds me of Teresa HEINZ. Did/do you like her? Once her fake "loving wife" ruse didn't work to get "Scary" Kerry elected, she went back to her HEINZ name.

I seem to hear the maiden name included into the married name MORE with lib women than with conservative women. Hillary RODHAM Clinton, Ruth BADER Ginsburg, etc.

Makes me wonder why they married in the first place?
January 22, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterR.A.M.
R.A.M.
I had mixed feelings about Teresa Hines. She came from a whole different world. On the one hand, she was compassionate towards the disenfranchised, on the other, she was kind of goofy, which didn't help any cause. But the woman seemed to have a good heart, which is all that is asked of any of us. But no, I didn't see her as a 1st Lady or her husband as 1st Guy. But the, the people who protested her seemed to be doing so on the lowest level. No compassion. That was a turn off for me.
But I think you're right, why marry at all if not to become 'one". To keep the 'maiden name', is to dis the husband's name. And the maiden name is only the name of the mother's husband, so not very femininist after all..
A conumdrum.
And then there are the hyphenated-name. When the 2nd generation marries, there is the twice-hypenated name. In Brazil, there is the 6th hyphonated name. I had a friend who wrote her name around the border of a Brizilain dollar. It was that long.
But yes, you are right, it is the in-your-face feminists who dis the name of the one they have lowered themelves to marry. But they are still taking the name of the man that their mothers have lowered themsleves to marry. Will the maddness never stop?
January 23, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterMaureen
Well, when Oil Companies write the Energy policy, Big Pharmecuticals write the Prescription Drug policy, Credit Card companies write the Bankruptcy legislation you may begin to see some issues pop up about " corporate financial interests" as opposed to what's in the best interest of Americans.

Cobra: Where is your righteous indignation about the facts coming to light of Hillary getting elected to the Senate with illegal campaign donations?

Oh that's right, it is being covered up like a Cat's turd as we speak.

Tell Reid to give back Abrahoff's money he received, then tell us that Republicans are corrupt. Reid is the only one who has kept it. Even Hillary donated her money she got from him.

Just because Abramoff donated to MORE Republicans than Dems, he DID give money to Dems. That is what lobbyists do, or didn't you know that? Many of which are former politicians who go that route because the voters are about to throw the bum out.

Now get a life Cobra. Either that or be a good snake and bite me!

Sorry Amy, I couldn't resist.
