"The God Who Wasn't There"

nogod.jpgBowling for Columbine did it to the gun culture.

Super Size Me did it to fast food.

Now The God Who Wasn’t There does it to religion.

Holding modern Christianity up to a bright spotlight, this bold and often hilarious new film asks the questions few dare to ask.

Your guide through the world of Christendom is former fundamentalist Brian Flemming, joined by such luminaries as Jesus Seminar fellow Robert M. Price, professor Richard Dawkins, author Sam Harris and historian Richard Carrier.

See the movie the Los Angeles Times calls "provocative - to put it mildly."

Hold on to your faith.  It’s in for a bumpy ride.

So proclaims the new DVD called "The God Who Wasn’t There" .  In January 2006, Luigi Cascioli brought suit against the Catholic Church and his childhood friend, now a priest in Italy (with friends like these??), accusing them of fraud in the perpetuation of the proclamation of Christ’s existence.  He lost.  Brian Flemming made a movie in 2004 challenging the existence of Christ.  Hey, even Ozzy Osbourne’s son Jack doesn’t believe in the existence of Christ.

Since atheists cannot refute the miracles of Jesus, they must undercut the existence of Christ Himself.  For them that answers all questions, except that there is no proof that he DIDN’T exist.  To the contrary…

The producers of "The God Who Wasn’t There" also support "The War on Easter" .  No agenda there.

If one cannot disprove the the existence of Christ, the next best thing is to attack his divinity, sexuality, marital status or question the crucifixion or resurrection of Christ.

"I regard Christianity as the most fatal, seductive lie that has ever existed." —Adolf Hitler, quoted in Larry Azar, Twentieth Century in Crisis    (1990), p. 155.

Great minds think alike.

Leticia also addressed this issue on her site.  Happy 2006 A.D. (Anno Domini, "in the year of our Lord")!

Unfortunately anyone who doesn't know God is going to try and discredit that He even exists. More fool them...

These evil people will soon have some explaining to do...

Psalm 2
The Messiah’s Triumph and Kingdom
1 Why do the nations rage,
And the people plot a vain thing?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves,
And the rulers take counsel together,
Against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying,
3 “Let us break Their bonds in pieces
And cast away Their cords from us.”

4 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh;
The Lord shall hold them in derision.
5 Then He shall speak to them in His wrath,
And distress them in His deep displeasure:
6 “Yet I have set My King
On My holy hill of Zion.”

7 “I will declare the decree:
The LORD has said to Me,
‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.
8 Ask of Me, and I will give You
The nations for Your inheritance,
And the ends of the earth for Your possession.
9 You shall break[a] them with a rod of iron;
You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’”

10 Now therefore, be wise, O kings;
Be instructed, you judges of the earth.
11 Serve the LORD with fear,
And rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son,[b] lest He[c] be angry,
And you perish in the way,
When His wrath is kindled but a little.
Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.

I don't worry about it. Its like The Da Vinci Code, no one in the end will care. That's because no historian with any credibility will go near these guys. All of these Gnostic Gospels, false histories, and conspiracy theories have been tried and tested by historians both Christian and secular and have been proven false for centuries. They are only edifying for those wearing tin foil hats waiting for the aliens to arrive in black helicopters to brainwash them into becoming Christians and registered Republicans.

I wish I could be so innoculated against their influence, Tim. St. Paul said in the last times people would forsake the faith in favor of stupid, man-made fables. He said they would surround themselves with make believe stories that their itching ears were burning to hear. Finally, in II Thessalonians he says that the Lord will send a spirit of strong delusion among those that loved not the truth - a terrifying thought when we see the open embracing of all kinds of false beliefs today, even by professiong Christians. I actually hope that you are right and that i am wrong, I just don't have much trust that most people are that concerned about the truth.
April 18, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterJohnny
Tim is right that heresy has fallen by the wayside for centuries. The problem is that it has swept souls along with it in the process. That's the tragedy.

However, the attempt to discredit continues. No one can do it; all they can do is try to cast doubt like Satan in the Garden of Eden: "Did God say???" It's true with anything that the further we get away from an event the easier it is to cast doubt upon it. This is true for the life of Christ, creation, 9/11, take your pick.

This is also why Holy Tradition being handed down from generation to generation is so important. Many of the facts we know about Christianity that are not contained in scripture go hand in hand WITH scripture, and was offered to us via Holy Tradition. In Acts 1:1-3, after Jesus' resurrection and before his ascension, it says that Christ instructed the disciples about things pertaining to the kingdom of God. I"m sure this is where things about Joseph, Mary, the saints, the trinity and other issues were explained and reenforced.

So the modern day theological dweebs of the day will certainly fall by the way side, but there are many people willing to believe what is false because it fascilitates their lifestyles better than believing in a resurrected Christ.

Thank you for the information. These are obviously an attack on our religious rights. They are trying to turn the people against any religion but Atheism. The question are you going allow tyrants to win or are you going to stand up for the rights of Americans to express their religion without facing persecution. It is your choice but I wan a free America.
April 18, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterKerwin
You are correct. People keep looking for ways to discredit Jesus, but they can't.
April 18, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterJessica
The historical existence of Jesus Christ and the miracles He performed are a matter of indisputable history. If the Biblical accounts were history's only recollection of Jesus, they may or may not be enough justification, but sources other than the Bible (and, might I add, those frequently hostile to Christianity) do not dispute either Christ's existence or the fact that He performed miracles.

Like Tim said, no credible historian will touch these guys. It's simply not open to debate. A person either has faith or they don't, but they can't dispute the basic facts of what happened.

If they'd said that Jesus walked on ice (not water), they'd still be on very shaky ground but at least they'd kind of be in reality.

It's sad that this documentary exists but my faith remains unchallenged. Jesus Christ is Lord.
April 18, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterTrent
It is an irrefutable fact, Jesus Christ did and does exist.

It has been proven time and time again, by secular historians as well as Chrstian and they all come to the same conclusion.

To acknowledge Jesus Christ for some people is a bit terryifing, why? Because that would anhilate their arrogant misguided belief that they can do whatever they want without consequence and by acknowleding God would mean that they would have to change that behavior.
April 18, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterLeticia
God does not exist. That greatest collection of scientific and historical minds ever seen in history (Hollywood) says so and has the snappy-looking DVD and glitzy advertising campaign to prove it. So there.

I REPENT - I listened to competent scientists and historians while ignoring the true sages of humanity like Ozzy Osbourne’s son Jack. I did see, but now I am blind!

LOL! Mwalimu, that's funny!

Hollywood types need to enjoy the time they have here on earth... They may not enjoy the "interview process" they have on exit....
April 18, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterSpankThatDonkey
The participant's don't look like "hollywood types" to me...? -- perhaps your usage of "hollywood type" is more nuanced than mine.

Just watched the trailer, it looks pretty good. hope it's better than farenheit 9/11.

Christians will be persecuted. Eliminating God is one of the goals of communists. USSR was able to eliminate the visible Churches, but the believers still worshiped in their homes and in buildings.
The Truth: I visited an Eastern Block country in the 1990s. There was a church and my friend and I thought we would take a look inside to see what was left. There were not any cars or visible evidence outside of activity. When we entered, it was standing room only!
April 19, 2006 | Registered CommenterChief RZ
Chief RZ,

You have a good point. Out enemies have also learned from that experience. Now they work as discrediting and libeling religion. They will even support weird and dangerous minority religions such as Satanism in order to do it. Don't underestimate our enemies because they are intelligent and let by their hatred of religion in general and Christianity in particular.

A federal judge decided the use of Jesus in prayer was unconstitutional. A Navy chaplain had a disagreement with the Navy which was doing the same thing. The ACLU recently threatened a city council to take the name of Jesus out of their prayers and they caved. That is just a few of the recent governmental attacks I have heard about. This is happening even with the Republican controlling both the federal legislative and executive branches of government.
April 19, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterKerwin
Anything will be better than farenhate 9/11 jez. But both are so far out in left field its a wonder anyone took them seriously. I followed the trial in Italy concerning teh existence of Jesus for a while, and even covered it on my site. While some have tried to discredit the Gospel, and the truth of Jesus, very few have ever tried to deny His actual existence, for fear of looking stupid. This guy at least has that much courage.
April 19, 2006 | Registered CommenterTim
Tim, actually, I consider propaganda against the faith more troublesome than propaganda against the war in Iraq. In fact, it is mostly secularists that oppose the war. The President's detractors are not only political but spiritual foes: they hate his religion AND that he could be elected twice being religious. Fahrenheit is garbage from start to finish with the believability factor of ZERO (except among pot smokers) but trying to discredit the most successful and influential religious figure of all times based on doubt like Satan in the garden of Eden ("Did God say??") is an attempt to undercut everything good.

I'm pretty sure this movie will come to nothing.
April 19, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterAmy Proctor
Kerwin,

I agree with you. I'd love to know why people think Christians are taking over America. From where I sit, they've all got their heads in the sand.
April 19, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterTrent
AMY -

Not being religious myself, but fairly in tune with the sensitivities of those who are, even I did a double take on this!

??
Amy: I'm not trying to say undercutting the faith is somehow better than undercutting the war, at least I didn't mean to imply that. It was a bad comparison. Let it be enough to say that neither carry much weight in the Church or the secular world.
April 19, 2006 | Registered CommenterTim
Tim, I just wanted to make the distinction.
April 19, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterAmy Proctor
"Our religious rights"? What "religious rights"? Christians don't get "religious rights". Kabbalahists do, Christian Scientologists do, Islamofascists do...but Christians? We're not afforded such rights. It's kind of a fact of life these days. (don't say "Christmas" for goodness sake, don't display the 10 commandments, don't even THINK of displaying a creche at Christmas, don't pray in school...)

It's almost insulting to me to think that these idiots think God NEEDS us to defend his existence somehow. Or that we should have to defend his existence. I don't feel any such need to prove anything. Anyone who's a Christian and has seen His influence in their lives or has seen what prayer can do or how God can literally and tangibly change their lives knows beyond any shadow of a doubt that he exists.

He lives. He exists. He's real. These people who want to make movies trying to convince us and themselves otherwise are just sad. In my opinion.

"It's almost insulting to me to think that these idiots think God NEEDS us to defend his existence somehow. Or that we should have to defend his existence."

Patriotette, it's hard to explain the greatness inside this sentence. If only every believer (no matter the faith) could engrave that thought in his/her brain just how many cruel, useless and barbaric deaths would be spared.
April 21, 2006 | Registered CommenterJose Antunez
Detroit Patriotette, I agree. I don't think it's God who needs defending, but faith in God that is vulnerable to attack.

Great comments.
April 22, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterAmy P
I like what Detroit Patriotette said. No amount of stupid movies or "Judas gospels" would have any effect whatsoever on my faith, as it isn't based on reason alone (which is all those films have to offer) but on real experience of the God of Israel and of His Son in my life. Physics says that the bumblebee is aerodynamically unable to fly, and I suppose one who has never observed a bumblebee in flight would accept the scientific conclusion....but one Spring day, their world might fall apart!

However, I guess that these movies are dangerous to those who are not yet Christians, they could be an obstacle to faith for those who have not yet felt God's hand in their lives, and have only science and their sense of reason to go by. And so I suppose the best thing Christians can do to counteract their influence is to ask God to make our daily lives into living "movie trailers" for Christ.
