Pope Apologizes Like Dick Durbin

Bottom Line Up Front:  Sen. Dick Durbin's apology for comparing US soldiers to Nazis or Pol Pot sounds like Pope Benedict's apology to Muslims; the difference is that Durbin sided with the Islamofascists.  Pope Benedict did the opposite.

Remember Pope Benedict’s comment last week in which he quoted a 14th century Byzantine emperor? He quote cited was:

“I quote, ‘Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached’."

Well, today Pope Benedict offered an apology, sort of, to the mad Muslims of the world who are burning things down and killing Christians until they get the proper respect they deserve.

"I am deeply sorry for the reactions in some countries to a few passages of my address at the University of Regensburg, which were considered offensive to the sensibility of Muslims.

"These in fact were a quotation from a medieval text, which do not in any way express my personal thought. I hope this serves to appease hearts and to clarify the true meaning of my address, which in its totality was and is an invitation to frank and sincere dialogue, with mutual respect."

Muslims are NOT impressed.

Mohammed el-Sayed Habib, deputy leader of the Muslim Brotherhood: "The pope's comments that downplayed his earlier remarks are not enough. We will not accept anything less than an apology."

Mehmet Aydin, Turkey’s State Minister: "You either have to say this 'I'm sorry' in a proper way or not say it at all. Are you sorry for saying such a thing or because of its consequences?"

Mahmoud Ashour, former deputy of Cairo's Al-Azhar Mosque, the Sunni Arab world's most powerful institution: "It is not enough. He should apologize because he insulted the beliefs of Islam. He must apologize in a frank way and say he made a mistake."

Mohammed al-Nujeimi, professor of Judicial and Islamic Studies in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: "The pope does not want to apologize. He is evading apology and what he said today is a repetition of his previous statement.”

Ahmad Khatami, Muslim cleric: "If the pope does not apologize, Muslims' anger will continue until he becomes remorseful. He should go to clerics and sit and learn about Islam."

No wonder the Pope stuck to his guns.

Pope Benedict's "apology" brings to mind the "apology" of Senator Dick Durbin in June 2005, who compared US soldiers at Guantanamo Bay to Nazis and Pol Pot:

"If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags or some mad regime — Pol Pot or others — that had no concern for human beings. Sadly, that is not the case. This was the action of Americans in the treatment of our -- their own prisoners."

Durbin's "apology":

“I am sorry if anything I said caused any offense or pain to those who have such bitter memories of the Holocaust, the greatest moral tragedy of our time.  I am also sorry if anything I said cast a negative light on our fine men and women in the military..."

The difference being that Durbin sided with Islamofascists who committed acts of violence.  The Pope did the opposite.

Viva Pope Benedict!

I’ve been reading on the internet that many Muslims are beginning to agree with the Pope, a good sign, ( who read from a medieval text and were not his own words, while he was addressing academics for a solution to peace) , and Islam should look at its self and its doctrine of violence. It’s a 7th Century law, and has come outdated in the 21st Century. For example, Sūrah 2, 191-193, calls for anyone not a Muslim to be killed. What kind of civil progress is that? This recent call for the killing of the Pope, by some Muslim VIPs, is childless, irresponsible, and outright sad.

Amy,
You are correct, viva la Pope. Equally as important to point out that the apology is not for what he said but how it was interpreted. Of that,I am sorry too. But the facts remain the same. The Muslims prove time and time again that they are guilty of everything that they are accused of. The fact that they protest with the sword comments made about Mohammad teaching the value of the sword is nothing short of ludicrous.

Comments back on. It was an oversight.

cool! I personally wish he hadn't apologised, being a Christian means that what we say whether it's the truth or not is not necessarily going to be taken positively or negatively. It's not his responsibility if people are going to be offended by his words when what he's said is the truth.

You're welcome, Amy. :)

Pope Benedict knows that what Islamofascists are doing is evil; how could he not? I'm glad that his "apology" wasn't really an apology or retraction of what he said and that he only stated he was sorry for the way they were offended by it! Ha! They are offended by everything. The most offensive people on the planet are unable to take any criticism whatsoever, and by their reaction they only prove that the Pope was exactly right!

Gee, the Pope's apology sounds a lot like the reaction of Muslim leaders to 9/11... i.e., "I feel bad about it." Not, "this was wrong."

When Muslims start apologizing for the almost 6,000 acts of terrorism they've perpetrated since 9/11 and start acting like civilized human beings, then maybe they'll deserve an apology.

I am quite shocked at some of the statements I have read here. The impression being given is that all Muslims everywhere started killing Christians all over the planet and burning everything that came to their sight upon hearing Benedict's comments. This is outrageously false. The overwhelming majority of protests have been peaceful, with no violence and burning etc. Yes, some unfortunate incidents occured, but they were exceptions and isolated events, condemned openly by mainstream Muslims.

A reader commented:

"For example, Sūrah 2, 191-193, calls for anyone not a Muslim to be killed. What kind of civil progress is that?"

When I read this I was like "what the f..." so I decided to check out these passages. Here is what it says:

"Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth not transgressors.

And slay them wherever ye catch them, and turn them out from where they have Turned you out; for tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter; but fight them not at the Sacred Mosque, unless they (first) fight you there; but if they fight you, slay them. Such is the reward of those who suppress faith.

But if they cease, Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

And fight them on until there is no more Tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah; but if they cease, Let there be no hostility except to those who practise oppression."

I bet this guy/gal never read a single passage of the Quran him/herself. As is obvious, there is no command here to kill non-Muslims just because they happen to be non-Muslims. The passage is referring to a specific group of armed polythiests during the time of Muhammed who had started the conflict by killing Muslims and driving them out of their homes and then committing further violent acts. Command is given to Muslims to fight these combatants and permission is given to kill them in warefare - this is what every army does (killing enemy fighters). But, if these pagan combatants cease, then Muslims are also to end hostilities and make peace. Moreover, command is given not to "transgress limits," which means not to kill innocent people, the civilians, the priests/monks, women, children etc.

Consider this passage from the Quran:

"Allah forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) Faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for Allah loveth those who are just.

Allah only forbids you, with regard to those who fight you for (your) Faith, and drive you out of your homes, and support (others) in driving you out, from turning to them (for friendship and protection). It is such as turn to them (in these circumstances), that do wrong."

60:8

In the Quran there are no commands to go out and kill all non-Muslims. Compare this with the teachings of the Bible...scary stuff in the Jewish Bible!

Karen said:

I have very good Muslim neighbours and I think it is absolutely ridiculous to demand that they "apologise" for 9/11 or the alleged 6000 (false) acts of terrorism since 9/11 since they did not participate in this acts and nor did the perpetrators request their permission to conduct these acts. 99% of Muslims are not involved in any terrorism and are normal human beings like others for crying out loud! Do hatemongers such as Karen even think before embarassing themselves with stupid racist comments like that? Its unbelievable, you so-called "civilized" human beings, the followers of the "prince of peace", absurdly blaming an entire community for the acts of a few individuals, while completely ignoring the history of the different conflict zones and the effect that has had on some people.

Shame on all of you hatemongers, be it followers of UBL or evangelical conservatives.
