Michael Yon on Christians and Muslims Working Together

Michael Yon’s latest dispatch, Thanks and Praise, highlights Christians and Muslims working together to repairing the steeple of a Christian Church in Baghdad, Iraq.

ThankPraise.jpg

Thanks and Praise: I photographed men and women, both Christians and Muslims, placing a cross atop the St. John’s Church in Baghdad. They had taken the cross from storage and a man washed it before carrying it up to the dome.

A Muslim man had invited the American soldiers from “Chosen” Company 2-12 Cavalry to the church, where I videotaped as Muslims and Christians worked and rejoiced at the reopening of St John’s, an occasion all viewed as a sign of hope.

The Iraqis asked me to convey a message of thanks to the American people. ” Thank you, thank you,” the people were saying. One man said, “Thank you for peace.” Another man, a Muslim, said “All the people, all the people in Iraq, Muslim and Christian, is brother.” The men and women were holding bells, and for the first time in memory freedom rang over the ravaged land between two rivers. (Videotape to follow.)

I’ve been hammering home this message for many months now: there are lots of good Muslims and it is more than possible for Christians and Muslims to live side by side in peace if mutual respect is the standard.

But, but, but... This is impossible...according to the nay sayers at any rate

J Rob,

I don't know if you've noticed, but the "nay sayers" are predominantly RW haters, like Anne Coulter and David Horowitz.

There are two issues implied in both your comments:

Naysayers:
1) those who said the war couldn't be successful/won
2) those who said Muslims are unredeemable animals.

I think JRob was referring to the first.

grumpy, I am disillusioned with Ann Coulter. I like her politically when it comes to how she handles Democrats (for the most part) but when it comes to the war on terror she hurts the cause with her ignorant rhetoric.

...but I wouldn't call Ann Coulter a hater but an instigator. Frankly, I think she looks a little desperate in promoting her last/latest book. Just my opinion. I like her but NOT on the war on terror.

I've been disillusioned wit ann for quite some time with her war on terror rhetoric. But yes, I was primatily referring to the first group, though the second can be included.

Annie is out to sell her books by being intentionally abrasive. This was the most inspirational photo to come out of the war and Mike deserved to capture it and deserves a Pulitzer for it. This has been on every blog I have visited today from little ole me to the big dogs. I choke up everytime I see it!

Thank God for Michael Yon telling the story most people will never know about in Iraq.
