N.O.W. Abandons Women for Leftist Politics

Bottom Line Up Front:  Where is N.O.W. when it comes to women suffering around the world? Silent. They'd rather women suffer in other countries than speak out against it if it means women's rights advance under a George W. Bush administration.

Tammy Bruce, a feminist and former National Organization for Women (N.O.W.)  chapter leader in Los Angeles, spoke on Fox News condemning N.O.W. for its abandonment of women for liberal politics. Specifically discussed were the case of the British teacher Gillian Gibbons, who was arrested in Sudan last week for allowing her students to name a classroom teddy bear “Mohammed”, and a Saudi woman who was gang raped and given 200 lashes and jail time.

Of course, N.O.W. was conspicuously silent on Bill Clinton’s sexual harassment and/or affairs with Paula Jones, Gennifer Flowers, Monica Lewinsky, Elizabeth Gracen, Sally Perdue and Dolly Browning…..

First of all, Thank God! This poor teacher is finally safe. How terrified she must have been. I was so afraid she was going to be tortured and then murdered.

N.O.W is all about promoting leftist political views and are anti-Bush, naturally they will stay silent.

The women of this country are so divided in political issues that we will probably never agree on anything. However, we should be united in one thing, regardless of our political views and that is to cry out in outrage at the mistreatment and abuse of women who are being punished, beaten or inprisoned for such miniscule infractions.

So, a teddy bear got named after Muhammad, that is not a reason to put someone in prison. Good grief! Half of the men in that country are called by that name.

And what about Muslim women in general, or Christian women in other countries being tortured or killed for things that wouldn't even deserve a slap on the hand in the United States or the UK, or any free country?

You bring up several great points, Leticia. I'll give my thoughts in a bit....

I see reports that she wants to STAY in Sudan too.. something is seriously wrong with a world that will not stand up, speak out and say enough of this nonsense.

I posted Tammy's comments in contrast to the ladies on The View discussing naming a teddy Jesus. Tammy is spot on here. I also got some nasty feedback from a jihadi on an earlier post about the teddy bear protests and fiasco.

Spree, lets wait till she speaks in Britain. We have no idea what was the context. Maybe she liked the idea of bringing education to the underprivileged. The unfortunate circumstances were something, apparently, she did not anticipate.

There is a movement within Islam that rejects the stupidity we saw surrounding the Gibbons case. Obviously calling for someone's death because of a a perceived slight is contrary to good religion. Most Muslims look on situations like that of the British teacher and the teddy bear as embarrassing for their religion.... but like suicide bombers in Iraq, it is the extreme reactions that get all the attention.

I would also point out that Sudan and other African countries are saturated with paganism. Mix that with Islam and Houston, we have a problem.

One of the best things to happen in American politics was the self-destruction of hard-Left feminist groups like NOW during the Clinton regime. They were given so much rope (publicity) by the MSM in an attempt to help them that they hung themselves instead.

We see a similar process underway with the Democrat-controlled Congress and its microscopic approval ratings. The Kool-Aid Krowd will insist that it is because they have not impeached and beheaded Bush and Cheney. By all means - let us hope that they keep up this delusion. Their fall will be harder and faster than NOW’s was.

Amy, let us pray that they get heard over the noise of the extremists, I still will never trust them as a group but as individuals they can be reasoned with as our COIN operation is proving and well. I know you read Mike Yon.Folks are rejecting sha`ria law in its extreme form just as the rest of the civilized world rejected the extremes of Moseanic law and reformed themselves. This really made them look extremely stupid in their reaction and when combined with the cartoon fiasco makes them look like the moronic idiots the followers of a desert pirate really are.Our values are having a tremendous impact on the islamic world that will take a decade at the minimum to sort out, thanks to the actions of our Armed Forces.

NOW is a classic case of leftist "capture", the takeover of groups and institutions, notably universities, and transforming them into hollowed-out echo chambers for deconstruction theory and practices. Which comes down to, "Everyone throughout history, and currently, is an unthinking spokesperson for narrow cultural bias -- except us, We who know the Truth. Therefore We must unify the world under Our guidance and governance."

Mwalimu, I agree. During the Clinton administration, N.O.W. was outed and the fact that they are not truly concerned with women's rights but are rather a sorority for ugly liberal women because undeniably apparent.

Goat, some of the noise obstructing the message of moderate Muslims are conservatives Republicans. When I posted an entry on Muslim leaders writing an open letter to the Pope to reach out to Christians, it was poo-pooed by (who else) conservatives. They are the ones we should be listening to and validating rather than throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Obviously the reaction to the British teacher and the teddy named Mohammed was ridiculous, but when conservatives go on and on with campaigns naming DOGS for example Mohammed, that only serves to exaserbate the problem. I'm sure you know naming a dog Mohammed would be an extreme insult.

I'm not talking about political correctness, but being smart.

The moderates aren't getting the air time for the same reason good news out of iraq isn't getting that much air time: it isn't sensational. They are non-stories. The nutsy so-called Muslims get the same press a suicide bomber would while the progress is ignored. That's unfortunate, not because Islam is a great religion but because it is a religion and we can help turn the tide of extremism and help good Muslims take the reigns of their religion.

You are referring to my dust up with a muslim parodyist on my site. If they want to call me an ape in jest I will name my dog Mohammed in response, if they want to parade and call for the death of cartoonists I will name my pig Mo. When they stop I will. Apparently I won that little dust up as they conceded it was parody. I had a long email conversation with Rusty at Jawa Report about the comments, they mock me and I will mock back, take it as you will. I do also highlite the incredible success we are having dealing with the moderate muslims in Iraq and elsewhere, I think Muslim leaders reaching out to the Pope and the dialogue is a very very good thing but the Koran is the Koran and it says what it says and they follow it as Dr. Spencer points out. I don't trust them as lying to the infidel is permitted.

I am not a "turn the cheek" Christian, hit me, expect to get slammed and hard. I side with Israel when it comes to Islam and they won't stop till they realize we are ready willing and able to fight back and kill them as readily as they want to kill us. I understand your point but I disagree. When they respect that Jews and Christians have a right to believe as they may in equality then I will also treat them as equals untill then.......?

December 6, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterGoat

Goat, turn the other cheek Christianity is essential for the spiritual and moral life of every disciple of Christ. However, Jesus didn't dictate "turning the other cheek" as a form of foreign policy. It is meant for the discipleship of the Christian and the betterment of society at the human level. Even then, humans without Christ are virtually powerless to be so selfless and submit to this edict.

The problem I have with your commentary is that you are putting all your eggs in one basket. If you have the criteria that all Muslims must adhere to a higher standard of tolerance before you'll accept even the ones who do, what can you possibly say in defense of Christianity? So-called Christians have waged wars and broken all the commandments in the name of God.

It's also true that we as Christians are often intolerant to other relgions. The truth is that all religions must have a measure of intolerance because if we don't believe it to be the complete truth it is not worth the devotion. But its the same for Muslims.

So-called Christians in Ireland killed each other for decades. Where's the outrage?

The Koran cannot be taken at face value any more than the Torah can. By that I mean it needs spiritual understanding and solid interpretation. Taking the Torah at face value, how can you justify God's law to stone a woman (but not a man, of course) caught in adultery? Or the death penalty for rebellious children? Or the destruction on entire pagan countries down to the women and children?

Or hundreds of wives for Kings in Israel?

Dr. Spencer focuses on the theology of Islam, which I agree is flawed, tainted and problematic. It doesn't do the discussion justice to dissect Islam from a theological point of view and condemn it based on what the Koran says, when it isn't all that different from what our Judeo-Christian roots dirived from.

Christianity and Judiasm have been able, because we have truth, to grow out of the stone ages and ancient customs without losing moral or theological truth. Some Muslims have not been able to do that. Hell, I blame Abraham. But should't we try to help them overcome bad culture if it means saving the world from extreme religion?

I guess it boils down to if you prefer to cast your lot with the masses who don't understand winning the war on terror and enflaming an enemy (meaning more U.S. soldiers and civilians will be killed) vs. using smart tactics to beat an enemy with bad religion.
