Bush Puts Iraq in Historical Context at VFW

Bottom Line Up Front:  President Bush brilliantly lays out the Iraq war in historical context using the words of critics for past wars.

President Bush today attended the annual Veterans of Foreign Wars National Convention, and gave one of the best speeches of his presidency about Iraq. Must watch videos.  Here, he compares Iraq historically to:

Japan: after a 9/11 type attack with an al-Qaeda like enemy, many deemed democracy in imperial Japan impossible, their religion unchangeable, and that "some people are just not fit for freedom".

Korea: the U.S. went to war on false pretenses, that a ground war would be futile and that the war was a horrible blunder.

Vietnam: the problem was America’s presence and if we would just leave, the violence would end. Instead, 10’s of thousands of Vietnamese were slaughtered and our enemies today use the Vietnam template as their proof that all that is needed is to wear down America’s will to achieve victory.

I found it amusing yesterday how everyone harped on the fact that President Bush used Vietnam and the lessons we should have learned from it and ignored the portions of history where he dealt with historical other conflicts.

I almost never wast my time posting comments to blogs, but in this case..

As I watched Bush's speech I felt insulted because the comparisons he made between the current situation with Iraq and the situations in Japan, Korea, and Viet Nam were extremely misrepresented and misleading to the ignorant masses that have very little knowledge or understanding of the facts of that history, and quite obviously you are among that group. The Bush people know they can rely on the ignorance of the masses, and that's why they get away with such crap, especially among the ideological faithful

I have researched and studied the history of the examples Bush used and
I could write many pages of rebuttals to his misrepresentations point-by-point with plenty of factual documentation to reference for support (no subjective perceptions allowed), but it's not worth my time because you and your fervent co-ideological types believe only what you choose to believe, regardless of the facts. Blind faith in the words of the Bush administration is the behavior of an ignorant fool.

In order to have a truly legitimate and credible perception about such things you must know the historic facts. You're appraisal of that speech clearly proves that you are not credible. I wonder if you posted such an absurd observation on the speech just to see if anyone would respond?

What particular history was inaccurate? I will admit that just art is subjective for a reason; two people can look at the same canvas and appreciate it differently.

With history, it is what it is. Bush didn't say anything factually incorrect. Perhaps you're interpreting the outcomes differently but his quotes from various politicians and historical events are a matter of fact, historical record.

I think it's the interpretation and implication you disagree with.

Here's what John Kerry said on C-Span yesterday about the Vietnam comparison:

Let me just say to the first part of your question with respect to boat people and killing, everybody predicted a massive bloodbath in Vietnam. Uh, there was not a massive bloodbath in Vietnam. There were reeducation camps, and they weren't pretty and, and, and, you know, uh, nobody, you know, likes that kind of outcome. But on the other hand, I've met lot of people today who were in those education camps, who are thriving in the Vietnam of today.

Talk about rewriting history.

Themis 109,
I completely agree. I especially agree with the idea that the current administration is betting on the concept that all it needs is a portion of the masses to believe in what he and his spew; all they need is for a portion to buy into their "story" in order to sustain itself. Yet, if you wouldn't mind, I believe that in arenas such as these, you must take the time to post your rebuttals. Believe it or not, you will get across to at least one person. And, little by little, people will learn to think and look at issues critically instead of believing everything the current administration spews.
