Media Ignores Major Iraqi Benchmark Accomplishment
Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at 08:53AM Bottom Line Up Front: Passage of the Debaathification law in Iraq is a required benchmark by President Bush and the Congress. So why haven't we heard about it?
Haven’t heard about the major benchmark met by the Iraqi government yesterday? Then you probably won’t hear about the major oil law being presented to Parliament, either. Just as it became evident that the surge is clearly working, liberals switched focus from the surge, which they previously promised would fail, to the difficulties of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki calling for his ouster.
When in a news conference yesterday President Bush congratulated the Iraqi leaders for passing the Debaathification Law, virtually no news outlet covered the newsworthy event. CNN cut to the Presidential briefing after remarks were already in progress, but were disappointed that Bush only spoke about the law rather than Alberto Gonzales’ resignation.
The debaathification law is major reconciliation legislation promoting the reentry of lower level Baath Party members under Saddam back into Iraqi civil life. It opens the way for the marginalized Sunnis to participate in public life and is a major show of solidarity and unity.
Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, President Jalal Talabani, a Kurd, Sunni Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi, Shi'ite Vice President Adel Abdul-Mahdi, and Masoud Barzani, president of the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region all appeared together on Iraqi television side by side to announce the law.
Oh, and you probably won’t hear much about the Iraqi consensus reached on holding provincial elections.

Well Amy we all know the answer....MSM and the democrats are in one agenda mode. The defeat and power grab they see in their sights. I've said it before here..any good news in Iraq equals bad news for dems. Or so they think? Besides making the president look good is downright wrong!
Good piece Amy, the MSM ignores anything that dosn't fit the political agenda of the left.
Some things simply cannot be ignored though and they do nothing but lose more credibility by ignoring these things.
The silence is deafening, especially after all the bleating about how ineffective the new government is. Now if the surge works and the government gathers some momentum, what will the dems campaign on? Great job unearthing these critical facts, Amy.
Amy, wake me up when they actually pass any of this stuff. This was a photo-op to convince congress that they're making progress in advance of the Petraeus report.
Really? Do tell, gregdn. If it was a photo op for the purpose of swaying American politics, why isn't the media carrying the story???
Typical MSM formula: Good News = No News. It's not gory, angst ridden, or politically motivated gossip. As a consequence it's not worth wasting time and precious print space upon... especially considering the costs of paper, global warming, ink...
Sorry, I've been ill. Got some rest, though.
So sorry to hear it, Steph. I'll come by your place to wish you well.
Excellent job Amy on keeping track of MSM bias. This is not just a photo-op. Agreements were signed by all the parties present, including the Sunni IIC. They also pushed aside the extremist parties, like Sadr.
Because they made progress in a new alliance with enough parliamentary votes, this should get pushed through.
gregdn,

good idea now get those who seek withdrawal to abide by your advice. wake Amy and the rest of us up when the insurgents finally overthrow the present government and install one of their own. all their suicide bombings are nothing but photo-ops to convince the dems and others that they are making progress in the face of defeat.
Michael, only a Democrat or anti-war lib would suggest passing key legislation they previously pointed to as failure for not being passed and say now that it's a photo op. That's whatcha call SPIN. We wouldn't want to acknowledge any successes in the Iraqi government, would we?
oops i apologize for leaving out quotation marks
Amy, I posted links to a couple important, analysis pieces today, maybe you can give them more exposure.
