Berkeley Gives Code Pink Parking Space in Front of Marines Recruiting Office

You already know that the Berkeley City Council voted 6-3 two weeks ago to send a letter condemning the Marines for recruiting in Berkeley, CA, that Marines were told they were not welcome there by the mayor and that Code Pink vandalized the Recruiting center in an effort to drive out the Marines.

You may not know that the city council also voted 8-1 giving Code Pink a parking space right in front of the Marines Recruiting station.

Talk about tasteless, reprehensible favoritism.  So much for non-partisan politics. END THE OCCUPATION OF FEDERAL FUNDS IN BERKELEY NOW!

9:39 pm begun #25 ( First speaker, the pro-Iraq lady in video
Council of Berkeley. #25
Tom Bates intro to panel of council: “such outrageous language” We need to apologize ( city council, 12:32 am, feb, 13, 2008.

“Councilman Anderson, I do not think we owe a apology,” 12:26 am, feb, 13, 2008.) “ we wanted to underscore and amplify our opposition.” Nuremburg …Unprovoked attacked, .. lies and fabrications.. Bush regimes, .. Scarified these lives of these marines. Second issue is right of ordinary citizens to redress… Code pink to give them a voice against these opportunities and lies… thirdly, we are trying to protect our young people.. .from fraudulently enlisted. Fourth reason, violation of a sacred trust, not to ask families to sacrifice their loves ones… unless there is no other alternative to this…we need to own up to that,, I was very buoyed.. .emphasized their support for this council… I take that very seriously… we elevated the Iraqi war to a new leveled of … troop surge… is ridiculous. That jrek senator that wants to cut funds…

Council G. wosniak. “ we must look at what the council said. I t said it seduced the young/ children… it said recruiters uninvited … we insulted the marines and we must apologize. We must be respecting both sides. The issue is not the war, it is what the council did… the Marines guard all our embassies.. do we want marines from only red states, and not blue states…The right to chose is [ good]…. Individuals have a right to choose, ..we should not impede that… a right to do that without being harmed.. we did it in a sense of arrogance…issue is not we are against the war… the question.. I think we insulted them and we need to apologize, and rescind both of those resolutions….

Councilwomen Olds: we waited 7 ½ to arrest the protestors [ illegal blocking free speech chained code pinkers]. I am very sorry my colleagues voted for the [ original] .. my citizens felt shame…it is not productive for the city of Berkeley… We owe our marines a deep gratitude… the issue is how can we as a city council to end this ghastly war.. I do not think that ..insulting the marines.. [ does good]… Get those war mongers out of office… An apology to the city [ not marines] …
Councilmen :Laurie Capitelli: It took me a day or two to apologies ( to district 5) .. my mistake was supporting… a condemnation of [ Iraq war] .. it was not what it [ said].. my actions two weeks ago undermined the marines… and [ promoted a single cause] to paraphrase Noam Chomsky… if you do not believe in right of privacy.. then you do not believe in those rights at all… 31,000 communications… some crude obscene and…….most comments from Berkeley citizens compassionate and compelling… how do I speak for all Berkeley citizens when they [ are diverse views]…. It is dangerous to [ give rights to one group and not others]] this apology is not under [ duress of threats]…. Eleanor Homes Morton, quote, I hope she will share it: the only way to make sure..is to respect the views of others….paraphrase.

Councilman Ken Worthington: I argued before #2 was adopted, it was [ bad for peace]… it was my mind.. we are not going to win anyone over.. to words that are needlessly inflammatory…we got liberal and radial [ Berkeley residences] that said these [ words were not good]. I would like to merge both recommendations, and also accept item #2. And ..motion I like to see.. we actually apologize, not apologize for supporting the peace movement, or for the Iraq war, but [ the inflammatory language]…

Councilman D. Moore: ..we recognize the right to ..[marines] we should not send a letter to the marine corps…
Councilwomen Dr.( Donna) Spring: I do not think we deprived the federal gov [ or the marines] any rights. Now the pro-war group, they do get their permit, the question is the council is subsidizing a permit. We make decisions like this all the time [ the discriminate] and we won that right all the way to the Supreme Court… so I do not think we have to apologies to the [ gov.]… joining the colleagues..[ ! she rambles incoherent].. Nuremburg principles, and Geneva agreement… we have an ethical [ job] to agree [ like the NAZi] we are just following orders.. the U.S. military is recruited.. for aggressive.. to serve the military industrial complex…Exons and Halliburton’s.. billions of dollars ripped off—torture.. we teaching tortured for thirty years—tortured millions of people in south and north America= comes a time when cannot take it anymore… and time to stop the machines….I’m proud of those who came out and support [ us against the gov]…..

Councilwomen Linda Maio: In a country that never attacked us… intelligence so poor.. look where we are.. so much pain…in a war under failed leadership.. from the beginning.. failed [ so many things] torture issue that came up [ medical programs]… army directs the veterans administration to not fill out the veterans papers for help… for me as a mother and grandmother.. go under this failed leadership.. I cannot accept the recruitment in our [ community] .. I want to honor the people who are doing this.. [ soldiers].. we want to bring them home. I do not support recruitment in my town….of a propaganda war… Bush is the top [ of the propaganda]… try to confuse our opposition to the war with the military decision.. so lets keep it separate [ not against the language] motion we accept #1, we substitute the language,,,, it does not at all substitute our sentiment [ the language] … a strong.. [ read a statements against the Iraq war,,, propaganda words]]…. Deeply immoral war [ we could use] funds from this war [ at home to fund].. Note at 1:00am the video feed cut it off and switched too KPFA radio, and it is music… weird. …back on air at 1:01…

Slap at the military( ?))) .. before

VIDEO CUT OFF missed something.. then back on after two minutes…
1:01 am…
We will vote…. I vote a substitute on a combination of the two.. combination…

Apology only to #2 of the original [ that is the language]., [ Worthington is opposing everything, 1:03 am he is obstinate…talks about gay lesbian… we need to talk about that” Worthington…]
Summery: What most positive things that were said were overturned by the no vote on most things except the language.

Voting on on #1) and #2) changes take place.. .. verdict…

#1) failed to turn over….
#2) yes in only conditional. Wosniack No! 7-2 in favor of

substitution that only changes wording, no forgiveness…. [ “sine the apology is not in there I say no”-- Olds I will vote no] so no apology. This is only a change in the terminology, I believe but not positive they did not vote to apologize to the marines…. the apologies were self-centered to their own Berkeley citizens for the outrage they incurred. Will get more later…. ( end not taking 1:08 am feb 13, 2008)))

After code pink applauded.

Bates abstained. Many abstained form the vote.
“We should show practical support.”
25. Reiteration of Berkeley's Opposition to the Iraq War and Clarification of the City's Support for the Men and Women who Voluntarily Serve this Country in the Military.

Colorado, Oregon, people came out to voice opinions on the floor.

Official news. Sorry for my short hand, cannot type fast....some appeared to be remorseful, although the rhetoric was typical...commentary on blogs on San Francisco Chronicle claim most if not all of the council members are ignorant ( of these topic issues). From listening to the entire meeting, there appears that they did not have deep conversations of the real issues of this war and why we have marines. But that is my opinion.

"In the end, however, the council voted against issuing a public apology for its January action." --San Francisco Chronicle .

remember the U.S.A. was built upon the apology. But commentary on blogs tell that this is arrogance – because why would they vote to overturn some of the language?

"(02-13) 01:33 PST Berkeley -- After a day of enraged confrontation outside Berkeley City Hall between anti-war and pro-military demonstrators, the City Council backed down early Wednesday from its controversial decision to tell the U.S. Marines they are "unwelcome intruders" for operating a downtown recruiting center."

note this is only #2 conditional sec. language..."unwelcome intruders"

Why did they not fight on, may be financial reasons.

Cal, wow, thanks for that reporting. Berkeley city council is representative of its people so its no wonder the council is so leftist and anti-military. The hostility is completely irrational. This isn't the "war machine", this is the professional military that saves their butts from being attacked.

If we get attacked again, God forbid, it would be fitting if one of these liberal cities were the target. I don't condone it, obviously... Berkeley is like a bratty 2 year old who you have to save from himself, but if anyone needs a lesson to learn it is these numbskulls.

February 13, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAmy Proctor

Cal, thank you, I know that took a lot of time to type out. I am a former transcriber! Well-done.

Why am I not surprised that it was Berkeley that did this? I am with you Amy, they should have all Federal and Government funds taken away.

I don't think they would have had the gall to speak such harsh objurgations towards the Marines had they lived in a communist country such as Cuba or China or any communist country.

I don't think they would have been talking long. Freedom of speech is strictly prohibited.

Death, maybe?

Freedom is a privilage and honor and we should do both for those who serve our country.

Its really too bad, you have government authorities bending rules and regulations to aid and abet an intrest group so it could harass and attempt to itmidate and orginization. Take away the anti-war verse marines aspect, what are you left with. A government changing laws so a non government group can attack people. This is very ugly and quite facist. Mind you I am sure the marines who are there will handle the situation properly.

February 13, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterrobert verdi

You know Code Pink has essentialy been rebuffed by the Democratic party and it has no influence on US military policy. So how do they handle this, they go after the ground level guys who are doing there duty, God that is pathetic.

February 13, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterrobert verdi

What does it mean they backed down? Does Code Pink keep the spot, are they going to be happy with just a strong letter?

February 13, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterrobert verdi

robert, I disagree that Code Pink is impotent. If Dems take the White House it'll be ugly. They are thugs and barabarians but that hasn't stopped the Democrats in the White House before. I recall all sorts of shenanigins during the Clinton admin. Tact, decorum and ethics don't need to play a part in a Dem administration; it hasn't before.

February 14, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAmy Proctor

maybe your right, but if they had that much influence why would they be reduced to getting media attention going after marines in San Francisco. Anyway elected Democrats use groups like this to attack people who oppose them. After the Dems feel safe in power they usualy lock the door on them until they need these groups again.

February 14, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterrobert verdi

And I thought you "conservatives" were proponents of local government vs big government. (As long as it suits you - hypocrites.)
