Jeremiah Wright Embraces Black Liberation Theology at Nat.Press Club

Jeremiah may have just sunk Barack Obama’s campaign. His inflammatory, hateful comments were a far cry from Friday night’s low-key interview with Bill Moyers. Some of Wright’s points today included:

“Theologically, Malcolm X was not far wrong when he called the white man ‘the devil.’ The white structure of this American society, personified in every racist, must be at least part of what the New Testament meant by demonic forces… “

  • America is imperialistic and U.S. Marines are like the Romans who crucified Christ and occupied Israel
  • Barack Obama only denounced some of Wright’s comments because he is a politician who must say what he must say to get elected.

The Q&A portion was the most incendiary. The audience at times was dumbfounded, shaking their heads or silent. Aside from his African-American supporters that embrace his radical ideas, it was tense.

Dumbfounding. This may be the beginning of the end for Barack Obama. Wright has certainly killed his reputation with this exhibit of autheniticness. Wow.

Off to work….Plenty of video to follow.

Wright unapologetic about supporting Black Liberation Theology:

Wright praises United Trinity Church of Christ and Bashes U.S. government:

Wright defending 9/11 “America’s chickens have come home to roost” comments (note the condescending way he questions the white moderator):

JEREMIAH WRIGHT : “Be not deceived, God is not mocked. For whatsoever you sow, that you also shall reap. Jesus said do unto others as you would have them do unto you. You cannot do terrorism on other people and expect it never to come back on you. Those are Biblical principles, not Jeremiah Wright bombastic principles.”

Wright on giving unpatriotic sermons:

“I served 6 years in the military. Does that make me patriotic. How many years did Cheney serve?”

Wright defends his belief that U.S. Marines are like the imperialistic Romans who killed Jesus:.

Juan Williams just said Wright confirmed every stereoptype Wright had created for himself. OUCH.

April 28, 2008 | Registered CommenterAmy Proctor

And McCain embraced buddy Hagee who says God destroyed New Orleans because of sinfulness, and kissed up to Falwell who was just as evil. Blah blah blah.

There's just no winning in all this silly guilt by association B.S.

Let's get back to issues.

April 28, 2008 | Unregistered Commentergrumpy old fart

Yes, but McCain and his wife weren't married by Hagee, he didn't sit in the pews where Hagee preached for twenty years, and he didn't give money to Hagee's church, and he didn't have Hagee teaching his children about God and God's plan for the world.

The Barack Obama/Wright issue is NOT guilt by association, it is a valid point to make about the choices Obama has chosen to make. He has CHOSEN to spend twenty years in the pews listening to this and by not speaking out until called on the issue lent his tacit support to the statements.

He has CHOSEN to have his children shaped by the theology this church uses to teach.

He has CHOSEN to refer to Wright as his "spiritual mentor" full well knowing what sorts of things Wright was preaching as his mentor.

I have walked out of churches for far less than what Wright was preaching, and I created quite a stink at our diocese trying to find a parish that our daughter could participate in as an altar server when we moved. Getting a parish transfer is no easy deal, either. And yet I did so in each case because we did not want to compromise our beliefs.

This is not just some photo opportunity that someone is trying to use to paint a false picture - this is a look into the ideology Obama has chosen to shape his life. And the shape of his life would define his presidency.

What Rev. Wright says is absolutely essential towards forming an opinion of Barack Obama.

If I were McCain I would have rejected Hagee's endorsement. That's his call. But an endorsement isn't in the same ball park as ATTENDING A CHURCH FOR 20 YEARS. Wait until you see some fo the hate-filled, bigoted video I'm going to post. I cannot believe Wright had the audacity to say the things he said out loud. It's as if he didn't realize the microphones were on!

Its Pastor Wright who is making himself news.

What I don't understand is why everyone is tolerating his hate-filled sermons or preaching? If this guy were white there would have been zero tolerance and he would be marked as a racist, or worse associated with the KKK.

I am fed up with African-American this, or Mexican-American that. Regardless of what race we are, we should never tolerate racist propaganda even in the smallest form.

It's not about Rev. Wright. It's about those idiots cheering for him in the pews and at that press conference. Obama, are these really your friends that you respected and protected until the bitter end?

The issue is black racism being exposed in all it's ugliness. How pervasive is it in academia? Who makes excuses for it? Those chickens are coming home to roost. Anyone with the guts to say it like it is? Fat chance.

I was reading some of the comments by the pastor the other day at the NAACP. It was genetic based racism, disgusting and insane.

Leticia is confused;

What I don't understand is why everyone is tolerating his hate-filled sermons or preaching? If this guy were white there would have been zero tolerance and he would be marked as a racist, or worse associated with the KKK.

Let me help Leticia and others out. Perhaps those everyone(s) who are tolerating Pastor Wright live far, far away, in a strange and enchanted land. The folks that live there have a strange belief. Certain truths are self evident.

For example, if you believe in freedom of religion, what a pastor preaches from the pulpit is meaningless in a free society. If his speech is political in nature, or he is recruiting individuals for actions that are against laws of the common good, then you can condemn, then you can rally your citizens to action. But those charges can never be proven against Rev. Wright.

I suspect that those tolerant everyone(s) that have Lecricia and others so upset about just do not get too upset about what a preacher may say in front of a political candidate. But then, for example, they are also kind of tolerant of a male hierarchical priesthood that preaches fire and damnation to those who practice contraception, and gasp, preach God granted infallibility to one elected solely from their own ranks. Curious practice, kind of magical, almost as odd as Rev. Wright’s need to quote the Bible…

But then, those everyone(s) that live in the far, far away land, maybe insane. robert verdi felt this was a reasonable explanation for Rev. Wright’s sermons. I mean, if those everyone(s) believe in free speech, they must believe in metaphor, imagery, parables, and all the other “stuff” Rev Wright and others may use…

I have visited that strange land, and I would urge others to go there and examine their culture. They actually have a document that has codified free speech, and freedom of religion. They have it in a rotunda in their capital.

But, be cautious. It has not been easy, why it was only 50 years ago that people of color were granted full voting rights, and a variety of problems still afflict the country. The one thing that really gets those believers in self evident truths upset and kind of angry is being labeled as un-patriotic. As you can discern from the videos offered by our gentle host, it kind of got under Pastor Wright’s skin, it gets under mine, and it gets under those who support Obama… But then, some folk seems to enjoy hurling that un-patriotic epitaph around…

"Jeremiah may have just sunk Barack Obama’s campaign."

Yes,it appears so. He did go off the deep end threatening Obama. Obama must be livid. Methinks Jeremiah is trying out his fifteen minuets of fame. McCain better tell those supporters to stop the negative commercials, because this one is over and there is no need for negative adds at this point. It can only hurt McCain.

April 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterCalPatriot

It continues to mystify me how people take the First Amendment to mean that people can say whatever they want and no one can take offense to it.

Once again - basic high school civics here - Freedom of Speech as defined by the Constitution applies ONLY to actions taken in reaction to that speech by the government. Private persons and organizations - such as VOTERS - are free to draw whatever conclusions they wish from the hate filled diatribes delivered by a minister who claims to be downtrodden and yet lives in a 1+ million dollar mansion; and factor the decision of a presidential candidate to align himself with aforementioned preacher for over 20 years to determine whether or not they vote for that candidate.

It has nothing to do with freedom of speech - no one here is calling for Rev. Wright to be arrested for saying "God DAMN! America!". However, it is perfectly within the constraints of the First Amendment to be horrified and hold Barack Obama responsible for his long standing familial (because a spiritual mentor is absolutely a chosen family member we revere and look up to)relationship with Wright.

So, please, can you PLEASE find another argument to bring up in response to the defense of Reverend Wright? The one you made is not valid.

Freedom of speech does not mean freedom of consequences for one's speech - in this case, it does not mean that everyone will stand around and pretend Rev. Wright isn't spewing vile garbage just because there are no legal ramifications for having done so.

April 29, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterairforcewife

No Paul I am not. And just for the record, I am of Hispanic background and I know of what I speak.

The man is a racist, plain and simple.

I do believe in free speech, however, in saying that, I never, ever take anyone by their word without doing my own research. And if there is something that I hear from a preacher that I am not sure of, I go directly to the source, the Holy Bible because every answer is there.

Those who follow blindly will falter and fall. God did not create us to be blind and igorant.

Seriously, this whole rev wright issue is such a NON-ISSUE... They have put it out there because it looks like they can hurt Obama big time with white voters using a crazy old man... Instead of discussing REAL issues, they have people like yourselves discussing Obama like he was at church every second of every day... Sorry people but that is far from the truth. If you live the life a SUCCESSFUL polititian/businessman/whatever... YOU DON'T HAVE A LOT OF TIME TO BE SITTING ON YOUR FAT A#S IN CHURCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So get over it and move on, hey why don't yo guys discuss the economy? $200 a barrel oil? Why the Fed and dummy president of ours have not addressed our dollar????????? These are the issues that matter in terms of a President and what we should be discussing... Not some whack job guilt by association trip!!

EVEN JOHN MCCAIN KNOWS THAT AND THAT IS WHY HE EVEN SAID TO KNOCK IT OFF... Hilarious, republicans, conservatives, righties, or whatever you call yourselves think that they have a right to tell their candidate how he should be running and put out ads, etc... that he personally does not believe in. How many of you actually know REAL FEDERAL politicians??? Well I do and I have an ex-politician business partner, let me tell you this.... NONE OF THEM WANT THIS THING TO BECOME AN ISSUE BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL GUILTY!!! Look at Hillary and Bill..... Let's go through their association list....

So get over this old whack job and yes he does have right to say what he does because he lived it in real life whether people want to accept it or not. My father did, his father did and that whole half of my family that is old enough can tell you plenty of stories and reasons to be upset at white people. It is a matter of whether to accept and move on or not. Just like the older family members from my white side who would still use the "N" word... Or my grandmother who thought I was going to be a retarded glob because my Dad was black and my Mom was white...

Let's get a real discussion going about issues this country is facing and not about a crazy pastor who Obama probably socialized with more than attended services... Of which, I can pretty much tell you there was not a whole heck of lot of preaching going on during social time...

April 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSTLis the best

STL - the things Rev. Wright preaches are precisely one of the major issues this country faces.

The politics of racism - and the actions and beliefs of a society that has fundamentally tried to change through programs like Affirmative Action and legal remedies are the basis of many of the other issues we are facing; especially with the discussion of immigration.

It is absolutely NOT a non-issue, and it is Barack Obama's campaign that has made it the issue that it is.

As for politicians not having time to attend church regularly and still be successful politicians... Say that to Joe Lieberman, who observes Shabbat every week and lives as an Observant Jew.

April 29, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterairforcewife

try again... pointless... and you would probably never get it in the first place... It is the same thing as those who vote PRIMARILY on abortion (either way of course)... A non-issue(in terms of who is President because the President can't control that issue no matter which way you want it to go) that people want to ba an issue... No point made with Liberman because we are not talking about him. I believe he goes as does every Jewish person I know that is not a reform Jew. Do you really think Obama is really in church every Sunday?? Come on............. Non-Issue

April 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSTLis the best

Like I said, let's talk about real issues, not the associations of politicians because they are ALL DIRTY......... We should kick all the bums out and start over. That is the only way they will ever wake up and work in our best interest! Career politicians = BIG FAT DIRTY BUMS!! It's the system and they can't help it...

Our Paul, Wright is being tolerated. If you watched the press conference yesterday you'll see has a formidable audience that adores him. Then he has pundits defending him saying he has had a rough time in the 1960's.

Well, not to take away from the legitimate trauma of what African Americans have been through in this country (athlough I think it adds to the honest of the discussion to acknowledge that their OWN countrymen sold them into slavery in the first place), but it goes to buttress Leticia's point that he is indeed being tolerated. And he is a racist bigot.

Don Imus quoted a rap song calling the Rutckers women's basket ball team "nappy headed ho's" and he lost his career. Trent Lott paid homage to a senator who once served in the KKK and Lott lost his spot in the Senate as majority leader.

Meanwhile, Democrat Bryd was a long time KKK participant and he's still in the Senate! And Jeremiah Wright is still saying what he wants to say with a huge public forum at his disposal.

April 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAmy Proctor

Amy, seriously, before you start with the old Republicans freed the slaves trip you started to touch on.... Please address the shift in the polictical parties... Every time I hear this it makes me sick... Democrats, political party that was started by ex-confederate statesman a.k.a. "The Dixiecrats" and primarily located in the south. Is how you have the Byrd situation... So let's at least be politically honest about it... Furthermore, how many young Democrats have you seen that are old as dirt and have a southern accent?? Uhhhh... NONE!!! Because they younger ones with southern accents are now REPUBLICANS a.k.a. CONSERVATIVES...

But, and I say BUT, there was a shift in the political parties by geographical location that nobody ever wants to address so they can spin racism towards the side of "current" Democrats. Republicans were from the north and were actually called "liberals" and "radicals" back in the days of Lincoln. Democrats were in the south and were the "conservatives" of the time... So that point is true if you never address these FACTS... "Red" states "Blue" states ring a bell??? The "Blue" party moved from the south to the north and the Red moved south... That is a fact and can't be denied. Yes you still have a couple (literally) of old "Dixiecrats" left like Byrd but only because they have not finally croaked...

I will also say that the Democrat party of Byrd's day in the 50's and 60's with all of their backwards thinking towards people who were different is what destroyed the Black community in the U.S. by pushing welfare (Fact not fiction people). And little lady, before you start talking about who sold who... You look a little Irish and I think your people were sold as well so knock it off... That is the way things were done to a lot of different types of people back then. Before you talk about people look at yourself and your own heritage. THings are not always so "Black" and "White"...

When you make comments like "athlough I think it adds to the honest of the discussion to acknowledge that their OWN countrymen sold them into slavery in the first place" and calling that honest is just plain NOT. Unfortunately, the age group you fall in like myself does not have a real grasp on that generation. I do fortunately from both sides being bith Black and German. I know what hardships are thanks to my father, uncles, and several other relatives who grew up with "whites only" in their face all the time. That is to be respected.

What does not is the people 50 or under running their mouths about the same issues. Most of them have had opportunities and either have or have not taken advantage of them... Just remember, not everybody is Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton because they complain. Have you ever been to the hood to see how it works down there? I have plenty of times as I am a real estate investor as well as insurance agency owner and it stinks!!! Racism does exist whether you want to acknowledge it or not. It is just a matter of how it is presented...

April 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSTLis the best

You think this is a non-issue because you don't want it to be an issue. It takes away from the arguments you are trying to make.

And what is this "You probably wouldn't get it anyway"? How do you know what I would and would not get? You know, only from my nic, that I'm married to a man in the Air Force.

In your own way you are engaging in the SAME type of argument style that Wright uses, which is to say, "I've had a struggle, thus any criticism you have of me is racism."

Here's the thing - someone's color, gender, sexual preference, religion, or creed does not exempt them from saying things or doing things that rightfully deserve criticism. Obama's campaign aside, the things Wright says are absolutely worthy of being discussed - just as Fred Phelps and his vomit inducing cult are worthy of being discussed.

I can assure you that if America had found out John McCain was attending the Westboro Baptist Church FOR TWENTY YEARS, he would have been tarred and feathered.

And you opened yourself up to the Joe Lieberman remark when you said, "Sorry people but that is far from the truth. If you live the life a SUCCESSFUL polititian/businessman/whatever... YOU DON'T HAVE A LOT OF TIME TO BE SITTING ON YOUR FAT A#S IN CHURCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I merely pointed out that it is very well possible for a successful politician to attend church regularly. Perhaps you should have chosen your words better if they were not conveying what you were trying to say.

April 29, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterairforcewife

A Biblical passage that applies to Wright directly and is a warning from God:

Matthew 7:15-23
"Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.
"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'

Wright's fruit is rotten to the core.

*gasp!*

DEMOCRAT!

And there are still plenty of southern, conservative Democrats who are quite young. They don't accept the uber-liberalism of the national Democrats and tend to vote conservatively on national elections but on local elections, conservative Democrats still run for office in the deep south believe it or not.

Oh, BTW, for those who are claiming the Wright controversy is a "non-issue" please keep in mind that Obama listened to that nut for twenty years and more than likely actually believes what Wright teaches and is distancing himself from Wright publicly at this time as a political not personal strategy. Remember, before Obama gushed over Wright, wrote about him and said Wright was like an Uncle to him. When one considers another to be as close as Obama has with Wright, it becomes apparent that Wright has influenced Obama's political career as well.

So ask yourselves this...if Obama does get elected, how much of Wright's teachings will influence Obama's decisions?

That makes it a major issue.

STL, I completely understand what you are saying and it is pretty much to the point. I guess I was applying my own experience with Church, etc... and using that to judge him. Maybe he does not view or practice his Christianity in the same way I do. I go 3 -4 times a week and love the message that my Pastor brings to our following. I would doubt that he goes 3-4 times a week or is as involved as I am. SO I see your point. It really is a non-issue then... Good job!!
