U.S. Troop Deaths at Lowest in Four Years
Saturday, May 31, 2008 at 08:51PM Bottom Line Up Front: U.S. troop and Iraqi civilian deaths plummet along with mainstream media war coverage.
U.S. military deaths plunged in May to the lowest monthly level in more than four years and civilian casualties were down sharply, too, as Iraqi forces assumed the lead in offensives in three cities and a truce with Shiite extremists took hold.
All five of the “surge brigades” rushed to Iraq last year will be gone by July, lowering the troop strength to about 140,000, U.S. officials say. There are currently about 155,000 U.S. troops in Iraq.
At least 21 American troopers were killed in May — four in non-hostile incidents. That’s one more than the lowest monthly figure of the war set in February 2004.
And Iraqi civilian deaths are at their lowest since Dec. 2005.

Iraq is still a violent place, but the Iraqi government, a democractic government is going to survice and prosper. Most of this is due to the sacrifice and courage of the Iraqi people and the us coalition. Its also do to the choices of president Bush and the Republicans in Congress who accepted electoral defeats in exchange for victory. I would also add blogs like this played a role. We are not there yet, but almost.
Agreed, robert. Building and rebuilding governments and entire nations simply take time, but the Iraqi people are incredibly determined and resilient. They are the reason there is success in Iraq today and why al-Qaeda is on its last leg, the insurgency crumbling and reconiliation taking place.
Thanks for the compliment, by the way. ;)
More wonderful news that we we won't hear about on the mainstream media! Thanks for posting it! God bless! Padre Steve
Just once I'd love to see a war opponent appreciate the good news rather than exploiting the bad. How come these posts are never inundated with peaceniks saying, "Whew, we who say we support the troops are glad troops are safer!" Otherwise, isn't the silence a bit hypocritical?
